1/1/03 HRG Lands Big Clients, Boeing and Bank of America.

By SHANNON MORTLAND As the executive search business continues to feel the effects of the struggling economy, The Human Resource Group Inc. of Brecksville has bucked the trend by landing two new accounts - Boeing Co. and Bank of America Corp. - that are expected to increase the firm's business significantly.

The six-person boutique should know by the end of the month how many executives it will be charged with finding and recruiting for each company, but it could be as many as a dozen or more per account, said Michael Coman, president of the Human Resource Group. The Bank of America account could be worth as much as $1 million per year, Mr. Coman said. The size of the Boeing account was not disclosed, but Mr. Coman said the two accounts should boost the firm's revenues by one-third. However, he would not provide specific revenue figures for the firm.

The Bank of America account has the 14-year-old Human Resource Group shopping for a satellite office in Charlotte, N.C., the bank's headquarters and the city where most of the work will take place, Mr. Coman said. The office will start with only one employee, but Mr. Coman said he expects the staff there to increase quickly to five.

The Human Resource Group already has opened a one-person satellite office in San Antonio to handle the Boeing account, Mr. Coman said. The work for Boeing relates to military accounts, which the aerospace giant handles from Texas, he said. The firm also is doing some consulting work for Boeing, which chose the Human Resource Group because a vice president at Boeing had worked with the firm in the past, said Dave Bouse, director of human resources and training for maintenance and modification at the aerospace company's San Antonio office. The Human Resource Group will help to develop a common culture at the San Antonio site, which has 2,400 employees from various companies that Boeing has acquired, Mr. Bouse said. All of the employees came from different parts of the country and had different ways of doing business, he said. "We want to really try and leverage the strengths of all those groupings and set a culture," Mr. Bouse said. Mr. Bouse would not disclose the size of the Boeing account but said the payment to the Human Resource Group would be "fairly significant for a firm of that size."

Coming off a year when revenues in the executive search industry were down an estimated 15% to 20%, one small firm landing two large accounts is impressive, said Brian Lee, chief market strategist for Hunt-Scanlon Corp., a Stamford, Conn., firm that tracks the executive search industry. "There isn't a lot of hiring going on," he said. "For a firm that size, it's a fair amount of work."

Though the Human Resource Group typically has smaller clients, Bank of America and Boeing are not its first big accounts, Mr. Coman said. He said the firm does executive search work for diversified industrial manufacturer Honeywell International Inc.

That search work was one of the ways Mark Nicholls, now senior vice president and personnel executive for technology and operations at Bank of America, became familiar with the Human Resource Group. Mr. Nicholls formerly was a vice president of human resources at Honeywell and held the same position at Progressive Corp. in Mayfield Village.

Though the Brecksville firm was up against about 40 firms from across the country, the Human Resource Group was chosen as one of nine firms to recruit executives of Bank of America because of its work ethic, he said. "The Human Resource Group has a long-standing history of producing results," Mr. Nicholls said. "They always deliver."
